amazing. my entire childhood, all i wanted was an entire wall of my own that i could just draw and sketch on. i'm trying to think of something else i missed in childhood, but really, a drawing wall was it. this wallpaper by jon burgerman would have been so incredibly fun!

i have loved the look of cyanotype prints since playing with sunprint kits back in elementary school. both of these fabric versions were made using the same process- it is possible to buy sun-sensitive fabric as well as paper! (there are very sophisticated ways to chemically work with cyanotype in the darkroom as well- view some here). looks like such a fun weekend project, and the results are so striking!

i recently had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful paper store here in Philadelphia. i first discovered Casa Papel when searching desperately for unique, artful wedding invitations. I found my solution just down the street, and have been impressed with the beauty and spirit of the store ever since. the owner, Cecilia Torres, was kind enough to spend some time sharing the story of her lovely business with me.
as a child, Cecilia enjoyed spending time "making things" and was fascinated by beautiful pattern. an artistic introvert, she expressed herself through making cards and writing. after finding challenges when making her own wedding invitations, it became her dream to open a store with all creative services under one roof- paper goods, design, printing, cutting, and assembling. she knew her store would celebrate hand-created art, rather than provide a mass-produced solution.
when moving to Philadelphia, the time was right to pursue her passion, and she partnered with her husband to come up with a business plan for their new venture. the store was named Casa Papel (House of Paper), since Cecilia and her husband, Nestor, wanted customers to feel as if they were being welcomed into their home. "Mi Casa es Su Casa" as she told me.
in designing the store, the couple relied on their minimalist design
sensibilities to create an uncomplicated, clear, freeing space. they
worked to engage all five senses, using the attractive visual of the
paper, calming background music, seasonal scents, displays encouraging
touch, and even tasty hot cider during the recent holiday season.
Cecilia is the primary buyer for the store, and carries a spectacular
assortment of specialty paper. she seeks out vendors who work directly
with artisans all over the world or are involved in fair-trade work.
walking into her store, her love of nature is apparent- the space is
modern, but organically so. there are moments of intense color and
texture, balanced with calming spaces and clean organization.
many thanks to Casa Papel for letting me spend the morning with such inspiring company!
